Panchayat

A Panchayat is a body of elected representatives of the people to administer the affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. In the case of a Gram Panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of a Panchayat are: President: He is the head of the Panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat. Vice President: He assumes the responsibilities in the absence of the President. Ward Members: Representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat. Standing Committees: These are sub-committees formed to facilitate decision-making, such as finance, development, welfare, health, education, etc

History of Grama Panchayat

Thalappalam Grama Panchayat is an agricultural and cultural heritage village panchayat located in the Meenachil Taluk of Kottayam district. Formed in 1953, this panchayat is spread over an area of 29.92 square kilometers in the Western Ghats midland region. While rubber is the primary crop here, diverse cultivation including coconut, black pepper, banana, coffee, and ginger also thrives in the region. The Thalappalam Rural Library, established in 1948, and the Melampara Mutual Aid Society, formed in 1927, represent the educational and cooperative heritage of the locality. Thalappalam was the domain of literary and theatrical luminaries such as Mahakavi Kattakayam Cherian Mappillai and Devasya Anjoottimangalam.
